Mark Selby has become the first player in history to win four world titles after defeating one-time finalist Barry Hawkins 18–15 in the World Snooker Championship final in Sheffield. It’s been a long, hard and winding road for Mark Selby, but the title should be the perfect ending to a near-perfect season.

As he has been for much of the tournament, Mark Selby was the man of the moment at the World Snooker Championship final, as he beat John Higgins to win the title for the fourth time in five years. The 34-year-old trailed 7-2 at one point, but fought back incredibly to take the match into a final frame, which he won, to clinch an 18-14 victory.

Mark Selby won his fourth world title with an 18-15 victory over Sean Murphy in a packed Crucible Theatre.

Selby, who led 14-11 in the final session, is now just three Crucible titles away from Stephen Hendry’s record of seven.

Shots of 66, 68 and an excellent 120 enabled him to break Murphy’s resistance in a high-level battle.

Selby, 37, receives £500,000 in prize money and rises to second in the world rankings behind Judd Trump.

A new era of Selby domination?

By the time he had won three world titles in four years, Selby was at the top of the world rankings, his supremacy seemed unquestionable.

Although those days seemed to be over, his return to form under Chris Henry, who also coaches Murphy, and the quality of his all-round game suggest that he is more than capable of continuing to win snooker’s biggest prizes.

Along with Scot John Higgins, who has four titles, only Hendry (seven), Ronnie O’Sullivan, Steve Davis and Ray Reardon (all six) have won more world titles than Selby in the modern era.

And while he’s probably focused on ousting Trump right now, Selby’s 20th win is his biggest yet. The major title also cemented his place among the greats of the Triple Crown – he is tied with Higgins’ nine titles and trails only Davis, Hendry and O’Sullivan.

Winning first against Ronnie O’Sullivan was a dream come true and winning four times is something I could only dream of, Selby told Two TV.

When you compete in a world final, you always do your best. It is such a tough tournament and you never know if it will be your last.

My goal is to become number one in the world again. You still have goals in your career. I’m going in the right direction.

While coach Henry was an interested observer of both players, Selby kept control of the game earlier in the session Monday afternoon.

Life has been hard – Murphy thanks viewers of the Crucible

The last few sessions of the Championships have been a remarkable sporting milestone, with large numbers of spectators attending a major sporting event in the UK for the first time since March 2020.

And the 980 fans not only added a semblance of normalcy, but also revived the roar of the Crucible and increased the nervous tension, especially when Murphy threatened an unlikely comeback – thoughts turned to the first decisive final game since Peter Ebdon’s 18-17 victory over Hendry in 2002 – two centuries in a row.

With Selby on the verge of winning the match at 17-13, Murphy came back with a fine effort on the pressure pots to bring the score back to 17-15, but a blistering miss on the left rail in good position ended his hopes of adding his 2005 title.

Mark is super gritty, unfortunately for me, Murphy said during the second show.

I got off to a good start, but he went into super heavy mode. He broke me last night by winning three frames, which was not easy for him in a match of this level.

Life has been tough for everyone over the past 12 months, but I want to personally and sincerely thank everyone who bought a ticket over the past 17 days.

Sport is nothing without the fans and we are very happy that everyone is back and that we have a full house tonight. I had a hard time this year due to travel restrictions, but you brought me back.

Along with a consolation prize of £200,000 for second place and a prize of £15,000 for the best break 144 of the tournament in his clash with Ian Bintao in the second round, Murphy can leave Sheffield with his head held high.

Elaine Murphy showed pride in her husband in an interview on Monday, a sentiment likely shared by fans who were delighted by the raw emotion he showed at times, as well as his attacking style.
