The total number of deaths in Covid-19 is now fast approaching 400,000, more than the number of Americans who died in World War I, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War combined, and almost as many Americans who died in World War II.
And that’s far more than in any other country where Covid-19 is closed.
The numbers are pretty frightening, Peter Hotes, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, told CNN Sunday night.
Hotez estimates that this amounts to nearly a million new infections per day.
It’s a very high level of transmission in the United States, and people are scared, people are angry, Hotez said. Since the 20th. There is a lot of work to do in January.
The new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Sunday that the country is far from being out of the danger zone, although vaccination is beginning.
By mid-February, we expect half a million deaths in this country, Dr. Rochelle Walenski told CBS Face the Nation.
Mr. Walenski added that we still haven’t seen the impact of what happened during the trip, during the holiday gathering, in terms of high rates of hospitalizations and subsequent deaths.
Hospitals in high demand in the next month
More than 124,300 Americans are currently hospitalized with the virus across the country, according to the COVID follow-up project. To put this in perspective: According to the project, this is more than double the peak of 19 Covid hospital admissions in the spring.
In its latest paper, the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrology and Evaluation predicts that hospitals in many states will be under significant pressure over the next four weeks.
This has already happened in several parts of the country.
Los Angeles County, the epicenter of the Covid 19 crisis in California, has been struggling for weeks with a sharp increase in infections, hospitalizations and deaths. According to the country’s health authorities, more than 7,400 people were hospitalized with the virus on Sunday, 23% of them in intensive care.
Pennsylvania officials said late last week that more than 4,900 people had been hospitalized on Covid-19 – nearly double the spring peak.
In Georgia, a hospital is so overcrowded that it has to treat patients in hallways and ambulances, according to WSB, a CNN contributor.
These are truly the darkest days, Dr. Deepak Aggarwal of Northeast Georgia Medical Center told reporters.
Option could mean a large number of cases in the spring
Meanwhile, several US states have reported cases of a new variant of Covid-19, first discovered in the UK.
The number of cases of this variant is likely doubling every week, according to Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.
It will be operational in about five weeks, Gottlieb said in an interview with CBS Face the Nation.
The only objection to this new option is the fact that by then we will have a lot of infections, so the population will have a strong immunity, and we will vaccinate more people, he added. But that changes the equation, and I think what we’re seeing is an inexorable shift from this virus to spring.
We can have consistently high infection rates in the spring until we finally have enough vaccine.
And while Covid 19 variants are not necessarily more deadly, they can still cause more deaths, Dr. Anthony Fauci told NBC on Sunday.
Although on an individual basis the disease is not more virulent, meaning it doesn’t make you sicker or more likely to die, it’s just that the more cases you have, the more hospitalizations you will have, and the more hospitalizations you have, the more deaths you will have, Fauci said.
12 million Americans have received the first dose of thevaccine.
Meanwhile, more than 12.2 million Americans have received the first dose of the Covida 19 vaccine and more than 31 million doses have been distributed nationwide, according to the latest data from the CDC.
The inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden is just days away. Mr. Biden presented an immunization plan that includes giving more people access to immunization, creating more immunization centers, and taking steps to improve the supply and distribution of vaccines.
Our plan is as clear as it is bold: Get more people vaccinated for free. Create more places where they can be vaccinated. Mobilize more medical teams to administer vaccines to people. Increase the supply and get it out as quickly as possible, Biden said last week.
And he also said he is confident that his government can reach its goal of 100 million vaccinations within the first 100 days. Mr. Fauci stated that he firmly believed that this was possible.
If we can vaccinate 70 to 85 percent of the population, we’ll probably have that herd immunity, Fauci told NBC last week. We may be starting to get closer to some form of normality, but that really depends on vaccine consumption.
