It is time for the world to recognise that climate change is a problem that can have serious negative consequences. Several heads of state and government spoke at the virtual Ambition Climate Summit, where UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also discussed the issue. He wants the world to declare a climate emergency.
Such measures could have prevented a disaster. The current pandemic has led to the postponement of the climate talks at the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP26) by one year. For example, the online summit was set up to ensure that countries did not lose sight of the main agenda.
These are plans to reduce carbon emissions under the Paris Agreement of 2015.
The signatories are committed to trying to limit global warming to a certain level in order to halt global warming and the resulting climate change. This could become a reality when renewable energies replace fossil fuels. Such a measure could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and halt climate change. Car manufacturers promote electric cars to test climate change, and Elon Musk is one of them.
The message from the UN summit was to stop the attack on the planet. Countries need to take measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. The UN Secretary-General has called on world leaders to take this issue seriously and declare a climate emergency until they become carbon neutral. Few countries have done that.
The United Nations, the United Kingdom and France jointly organise a virtual summit on climate ambition.
The United Kingdom is one of the co-sponsors of the climate summit. said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson : We do this because we know that scientific progress will enable us, as humanity, to save our planet and create millions of highly skilled jobs while recovering from VIDOC. He said the UK plans to reduce emissions by 68% from 1990 levels and reach this level by 2030.
Sky News adds that some other countries have set their target dates for achieving zero net emissions. Chinese President Xi Jinping noted that the capacity of the existing wind and solar power plants has increased significantly. The goal is to reach a net zero by 2060.
As for the Vatican, the smallest state in the world, the Pope has promised a net zero by 2050.
He said: In addition to certain measures that can no longer be postponed, a strategy is needed to reduce net emissions to zero. The world must accept that uncontrolled climate change can lead to irreversible destruction of the environment.
2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change
It is time to update the commitments made in the Paris Climate Change Agreement for 2015 with a new set of SSCs or nationally defined contributions. The virtual summit was an attempt to boost the 12-month countdown to next year’s COP26 summit.
Countries must limit the temperature rise to 1.5°C. This is in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. However, in order to achieve this goal, the world must drastically reduce the production of fossil fuels.
Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris Accord and did not take part in the virtual summit. The world will have to wait and see how President-elect Joe Biden deals with this issue. In November 2018, a report suggested that the United States could meet the challenges of climate change.
Climate change – a global challenge
Antonio Guterres, Head of the United Nations, spoke at the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the signing of the historic Paris agreement on climate change. The core of his speech is that the world needs to fight climate change together. He wants countries to work towards a greener world. The United Nations considers that existing commitments to combat global warming are insufficient. Honduras and Guatemala had to deal with several hurricanes, while India had to deal with erratic weather and air pollution.
However, several countries such as Australia, Brazil and South Africa did not take part in the summit.
