The New England Patriots are among the league’s elite, and Tom Brady is among the best quarterbacks on the planet. And that’s not just my opinion. He was named the 2015 NFL MVP, the 2014 MVP, the 2007 NFL MVP, the 2001 NFL MVP and the 2000 NFL MVP. Say what?
After an offseason in which the majority of the NFL’s top quarterbacks switched teams, the Patriots are an even preseason favorite to repeat their Super Bowl win. Tom Brady will be leading a group of four Pro Bowlers, including fellow All-Pro wide receiver Julian Edelman, into this year’s campaign. The Patriots will play in three preseason games, but no matter what happens in those games, Brady knows his team can make a deep playoff run.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Tom Brady were the big winners at the recent ESPY Awards, taking home three awards. The Buccaneers were named the best team, and Brady, 43, received the trophies for best athlete in the men’s game and best player in the NFL, according to Luke Easterling of USA Today. The Buccaneers received the award several months after they won their first Super Bowl trophy since 2002 with a convincing 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on their home field, Raymond James Stadium, according to Bucs Nation.
Bucks are first NFL team to win as top team since 2014
The Buccaneers are the first NFL team to win the award since the Seattle Seahawks in 2014. They defeated the teams of Stanford women’s basketball, Baylor men’s basketball, Alabama football, Oklahoma softball, Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Dodgers in the battle for the trophy. Several Buckeye players, including tight end Rob Gronkowski, were on hand to receive the award. On the first day of training, I looked around and thought: Damn, we got a lot of talent, baby, Gronkowski said during his speech. Gronkowski said coach Bruce Arians has always told his players that no one can beat them if they stick together. Gronkowski’s assessment was correct, as the Buccaneers were strong on offense (receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Antonio Brown and runners Ronald Jones and Leonard Fournette) and defense (Shaq Barrett, Devin White, Lavonte David, Vita Vea, Jason Pierre-Paul and Ndamukong Suh).
Brady shared a photo on Instagram of his teammates accepting the award and accompanied it with the following words: There are so many great teams in sports this year, but I think the ESPY team has it right!
Such a special group, and we’re not done yet. Next season, the Buccaneers will try to become the first NFL team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since 2003-04.
Brady is grateful to be considered.
Brady, meanwhile, is the first NFL player to win the Most Valuable Athlete award since former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees in 2010.
The veteran quarterback did not attend the event, but he did record the acceptance speech. I am honored to have been selected as a top athlete in men’s sports, Brady said in his recorded speech.
Brady said he doesn’t play for individual accolades or stats, he loves football and he loves that it’s a team sport. To be eligible for this incredible award alongside LeBron (James), Tiger (Woods) and Michael Jordan is pretty cool, Brady said. The veteran quarterback was named alongside Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, Denver Nuggets center and current NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid.
Brady also won the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award, ahead of other superstars like Los Angeles Rams pitcher Aaron Donald, Green Bay Packers pitcher Aaron Rodgers and Tennessee Titans pitcher Derrick Henry. Earlier, basketball player Charles Barkley said Brady was the greatest athlete of all time, and not just in football.
