Max Malins will play his first game for England after being selected for Saturday’s Six Nations match against France at Twickenham.
Malins, 24, is one of three absentees in the Wales squad. Luke Cowan-Dickey starts as a hooker and Charlie Ewels in the second row.
Experienced duo Elliot Daly and Jamie George have been relegated to the bench, as has lock Johnny Hill.
Center Ollie Lawrence is also on the 23-man roster. Round included.
England’s title defence is all but over after defeats against Scotland and Wales, while France are hoping to recapture their Grand Slam title following an outbreak of the coronavirus in camp.
We’re definitely disappointed that we can’t defend the championship, but that makes this game even more important, said head coach Eddie Jones.
We want to show what we can do.
Anthony Watson, who scored a try in the 40-24 defeat at Cardiff, earned his 50th cap. He made his international appearance on the right wing, forming a back three with Johnny May and Malins.
In attack, Cowan Dickey is making only his fifth appearance for his country and forms the front row with experienced props Kyle Sinclair and Mako Vunipola.
Ewels teams up with Maro Itoje on lock, with Mark Wilson, Tom Curry and Billy Vunipola in the unchanged backline.
Grand Slam champions France are still unbeaten in the tournament but have not played for a month after an outbreak of the coronavirus forced the postponement of their preliminary round match against Scotland.
The team has practiced very hard since Sunday, Jones said.
I think the best 23 is to really take the game to France and put us in the lead.
Dangerous Malins Gets A Chance.
Daly has preferred Jones as a full-back since 2018, but the 28-year-old has struggled to find his best form in the tournament so far.
His demotion gave Malins the chance to start and he made his England debut in November.
The versatile back is in attractive form for Bristol, where he is currently on loan from Saracens.
England captain Owen Farrell described Malins as a dangerous player and head coach Jones told Sport he had always seen the defender as a promising player.
His training form is improving every week, Jones added. We think he is ready to be the starting running back.
He has good acceleration, he is manly and he has a good feel for the game.
We try to strike a balance between historical and contemporary form – Jones
Although Saracens hooker George is on the bench for the second time this Championship, Jones said the forwards were much closer to the game against Wales.
Cowan-Dickie was in the starting eleven during England’s victory over Italy and has taken George’s place in the XV as Jones looks to freshen up his embattled squad.
Some fans might have wanted more changes in light of recent defeats, but England’s national coach has said the team is in a transitional phase, which he intends to approach by mixing the team’s experience with young players.
For Jones, it’s not so easy to pick only those who are playing well at the moment.
Form dictates everything, but there are two types of form, he said.
There is the historical form and the modern form. Some players get more because they have had good form in the past. We are trying to find the right balance.
The results are important, but not all and not only. As an England team we are expected to win every game and we want to, but at the same time we have a responsibility to develop the team for the 2023 World Cup.
