The report also details allegations of inappropriate conduct or sexual harassment by David Newman, the Mets’ head of marketing, content and communications, who was rehired by the team last year, and former marketing director Joe DeVito.
More than a dozen men and women told The Athletic that Holly Lindwall, senior vice president of human resources and diversity for the Mets, knew about the harassment complaints and did nothing against the perpetrators, complaints that included sexist comments from former owner Jeff Wilpon and former manager Mickey Callaway. People told The Athletic that they thought Lindvall would rather be a happy owner than continue with his complaints.
It was clear that their interest was in protecting the property and executives, not the office as a whole, a former employee told The Athletic. You couldn’t go to HR feeling safe and comfortable or anything.
Newman, who was accused of making inappropriate comments about women on the team from 2005 to 2018, told The Athletic that he does not recall making such comments. Mr. Newman was reappointed to his current position in November.
DeVito allegedly sent inappropriate text messages to women and insulted one woman in return. He resigned in March and said he wanted to reconsider his career, but he told The Athletic in an email that he wouldn’t give the accusations you hear a decent answer other than to say, I’ve always tried to be a gentleman with everyone I work with and deal with personally.
Team president Sandy Alderson, who reinstated Newman, told The Athletic that the picture of how the Mets handled the allegations was unfair.
I’ll try to be as clear as possible, okay? Not every affair with men is a death sentence for women in the workplace, okay? Every time something happens, it doesn’t mean anyone should be fired, Alderson Athletic said. Many intermediate steps can be taken, and in some cases we have done so. And in some cases results in the death penalty, but not in all cases in execution. And that, frankly, is what I think is going on in these articles.
These allegations are part of an ongoing pattern of misconduct in the Mets organization. Others named in previous allegations include former executive director Jared Porter, who was fired in January for explicit text messages and images he sent to a reporter; former strike coordinator Ryan Ellis, who was also fired in January for lewd comments; and Callaway, who was accused of sending inappropriate text messages, among other things.
Lindvall defended the way the Mets handled the complaints.
We have always had a strict policy against harassment and discrimination in the workplace, and we have thoroughly and objectively investigated all complaints brought to our attention, Lindvall wrote in an email to The Athletic. When our investigation revealed that wrongdoing had occurred, we always promptly took appropriate corrective action.
In March, owner Steve Cohen announced in an email to the entire team that a law firm had been hired to investigate the Mets’ work culture, focusing on issues of sexual harassment, misconduct and discrimination. A copy of this email was previously received from The Athletic.
