January ended on a high note in the NBA.

Sunday, Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook faced off against the heroes in a wild final series in which the Washington Wizards took advantage of an 8-0 run in the final 12 seconds of the game to beat the Brooklyn Nets.

Saturday night in Chicago, Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers accomplished a similar feat against the Chicago Bulls. Lillard hit a deep 3 in the final 8.9 seconds to add another chapter to the Lady of the Time legend.

Thanks to two defeats against the defending champion, the Los Angeles Lakers, last week, the Los Angeles Clippers now have the best record in the league.

What does all this mean for the NBA’s first rankings in February?

1. LA Clippers
2020-21 Record : 16-5Previous review: 2

Last week began with six Clippers games, with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George quarantined for health and safety reasons and Patrick Beverley (knee) out of quarantine. While the Clippers won seven consecutive games in Atlanta, they brought back Leonard and George after missing just two games due to a contact issue. They have now started a new series. Tyronn Lue pushes the right buttons, Reggie Jackson goes after Beverly and the Clippers have chemistry. The next step is a big test against the network. -Youngomisuk

2. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 Record : 15-6Previous review: 1

Los Angeles’ valiant effort to not lose two games in a row all season ended with back-to-back defeats in Philadelphia and Detroit, but the Lakers fought back in Boston. It appears that having Anthony Davis on the team for a lineup makes a difference. After missing the game against the Pistons due to a quadruple bruise, Davis returned to help the defending champions get back on track against the Celtics with 27 points, 14 rebounds and two steals. — McManaman.

It took a 31-6 run to close out Sunday night’s game against the Pacers, but the 76ers finally have a win this season without Joel Embiid. More importantly, the Sixers have the best record in the Eastern Conference. No team in the East this season has been as close as Philadelphia. It remains to be seen how this formation will look in the qualifiers, but so far it looks good. — Good time.

6. Brooklyn Nets
2020-21 Record : 13-9Prior ranking: 7

At least Steve Nash isn’t pretending when he talks about the Nets defense this week: We still have a long way to go. Scoring 147 points in the reckoning with Kevin Durant and then 146 against the Wizards with James Harden seems like a good fit. Yeah, Brooklyn beat the Thunder 147-125. But an epic collapse in the final ten seconds against Washington cut the lead to five points, and Brooklyn somehow lost 149-146. StatMuse summed it up: Since trading Harden, the Nets have an offensive rating of 122.6, which is the best in the league and would be the best ever. They also have a defensive rating of 119.9, which is the worst in the league and would be the worst ever. — Young people

Milwaukee led early in the week against Toronto, but then lost two games in a row to New Orleans and Charlotte. The Bucks are far from panicking, but Milwaukee is 11-for-8 in 19 games. Last season, they failed to get past eight defeats for the 54th game. — Woodyard.

8. Boston Celtics
2020-21 Record : 10-8

The final ten minutes of Boston’s dramatic loss against the Lakers on Saturday night were overshadowed by concerns about Marcus Smart’s serious leg injury. And while the Celtics will undoubtedly miss him in their five West Coast games, starting Tuesday in San Francisco against the Warriors, the fact that the heart and soul of the team is only two or three weeks away with the calf strain is the best outcome to hope for from a realistic standpoint. — Good time.
