One of the most popular players in the NBA Draft this year was Luka Doncic. The 19-year-old Slovenian is a 6’8″ combo-forward, who’s projected to be taken as a top pick in the 2018 draft. He played at Real Madrid last season where he won the Euroleague Rookie of the Year award and helped lead them to a continental title. Now his time in Madrid is over, so he’s in Dallas and ready to start his NBA career.

Luka Doncic is a 19-year-old rookie sensation for the Dallas Mavericks. As of this writing, he ranks as the rookie of the year in 2018, and you could argue he is the best player in the NBA. And, the reason is because he is making the rest of the players look bad.

The Dallas Mavericks made it clear this week that they will not be trading Luka Doncic, the franchise’s best player, anytime soon. That’s fine. They should keep Doncic, a 20-year-old from Slovenia, around for the rest of his rookie contract, which pays him $31 million over the next seven years.

After yet another elimination in the first round of the NBA playoffs, the Dallas Mavericks have decided to keep their superstar in the NBA’s best player rankings. Luka Doncic can sign a super max contract worth just over $200 million this season. If he chooses to leave, Doncic will enter the final year of his rookie contract with a lot of uncertainty about his future with the team. But even after getting little help from his teammates in Dallas’ first-round loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, Doncic is already convinced that he will indeed sign a lucrative contract.

Luka Doncic is expected to make a decision this postseason NBA

The 22-year-old superstar has nearly played at the MVP level the past two seasons, but the Mavericks have never advanced to the second round of the Western Conference playoffs. The Mavs’ biggest problem right now is Kristaps Porzingis and his $158 million contract. Dallas acquired the 7-foot-3 Unicorn in 2019 in hopes that he and Doncic would form one of the NBA’s deadliest duos. It didn’t really work. Since the trade to the Mavericks, Porzingis has not been able to be on the field consistently. And even when he was in form, he was usually a disappointment. During the first round series against the Clippers, Porzingis averaged just 13.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 47.2% and 29.6% from the field. But Porzingis isn’t the only one who has let Doncic down in the playoffs this year. While Doncic scored a total of 46 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds in his seventh game, no other Maverick scored more than 18 points. Five players coming off the bench scored a total of six points with 3-11 shooting for the win. Doncic is now forced to make a career-defining decision. Accept a supermax contract extension and hope the Mavericks can build a successful team around him. Or he may opt out and see what the franchise does in the last year of his current contract before deciding on his future.

Doncic’s extension to Supermax will cost more than $200 million

Here’s a look at what Luka Doncic’s contract extension will look like: 2022-23 | $ 34.7 MILLION 2023-24 | $ 37.5 MILLION 2024-25 | $ 40.3 MILLION 2025-26 | $ 43.1 MILLION 2026-27 | $ 45.9 MILLION This is based on a maximum of $115 million in 2022-23. – Bobby Marks (@BobbyMarks42) June 7, 2021 Doncic’s future in the NBA depends on whether he puts pen to paper or plays out the final year of his rookie contract. But after seeing what a contract extension would look like in the offseason, this decision might not be so important. Bobby Marks of ESPN explained Monday what a supermax deal would look like for Doncic. According to Marks, Doncic will earn $34.7 million in the first year of his new contract, $37.5 million in the second year and $40.3 million, $43.1 million and $45.9 million in the following three years. The total value of the five-year contract is $201.5 million. That’s not so bad, is it?

Mavericks superstar alluded to his future in six words and a smile

Luka Doncic flashes a wide smile when asked if he will sign a Super Max contract extension this summer: I think you know the answer. – Tim McMahon (@espn_macmahon) June 7, 2021 A day after Doncic and the Mavericks were eliminated from the NBA playoffs with a loss against the Clippers, the two-time All-Star was asked if he plans to sign his Super Max extension this offseason. I think you know the answer, he replied with a big smile, as reported by Tim McMahon of ESPN. Maybe he saw how much the extension would cost and doesn’t want to give it up. Maybe he just loves the city of Dallas and doesn’t want to leave. But either way, Doncic may have already made his decision. Congratulations, Mavericks fans. Looks like you can keep the NBA’s best young superstar at bay for a long time. COMPARED TO: Luka Doncic and the Mavericks have a $101 million problem that will haunt them until they make a drastic moveLuka Doncic has been making great waves in the NBA Draft since he arrived in the U.S. after playing for Real Madrid. After declaring for the 2018 draft, he went to the Dallas Mavericks and was selected with the No. 3 overall pick. After a successful rookie season, he took the opportunity to make a bold statement about his future with the Mavericks, opting out of his contract with the team and using the exit clause on his contract to become an unrestricted free agent in 2019. Because he is only 20 years old and has never been in the NBA, the contract he has signed has a player option for the 2020-21 season. Doncic’s agent, and the Mavericks, would not give a number for the contract option. Read more about luka doncic contract expiration and let us know what you think.
