The Legates return for a third season on the CW, where The Vampire Diaries and The Originals unexpectedly end their second season by defeating Dark Josie, Rafael and Alyssa, who were released by Necromancer, and the unconscious Hope and Landon. With the first of the season – and indeed with the first episodes of this new season concluding the stories of the second season – viewers can expect many surprises. However, the final minutes of the episode took a turn that fans may not have seen. The show’s Executive Producer, Brett Matthews, now explains what it’s all about – and how what happens next will matter to the general public.
Disclaimer : Spoilers for the first of season 3 of Legacies, we are not worthy, below.
At the end of last season, the Necromancer brought Alyssa (Olivia Liang) and Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) back to life and freed them from control. He allegedly did the same to his parishioner Chad (Charles Jazz Terrier), whom he had killed and who had returned a few months earlier. In the third season, while Alyssa entertains herself by intimidating Josie Saltzman (Kaylie Bryant) and Rafael tries to convince Landon’s soul (Aria Shahgasemi) to return to her body, Chad sneaks into Salzman’s crypt, mimics the necromancer, and awakens the monster from the well of Malivor, the Lady of the Lake, ending the day with a warning about the next Green Knight.
Although things do improve towards the end of the episode – Hope and Landon both wake up, and Raphael turns out to be a worthy descendant of King Arthur, allowing him to defeat the Green Knight – things don’t end on a happy note. Alyssa decides to leave Salvatore’s school, and as she walks with Chad, he explains to her how he’s going to take advantage of his second chance in life. But suddenly he starts vomiting up a horrible black substance, and then he drops dead. Given Chad’s ties to the necromancer, as well as those of Alyssa and Raphael, this sudden turn of events cannot bode well for the rest of us. According to Matthews, this surprising turnaround will make a big difference for everyone involved and change the way death is treated on the show.
It will make a difference. I don’t think you’ll miss her. I think they fall on your head, Matthews said. So you don’t have to worry about her. Here, this idea of death, as you know, is somehow portrayed by a necromancer and you know, the Diary of a Vampire…. We used to dump a body every other day. So [Legacy’s] is a very different series, and I think we’re all intentionally a little more thoughtful and careful about the idea of libel and what it means. And that’s why the body count in Legacy is so low. It’s a whole different thing in Legacy, and even Chad’s death, you know, I think it’s really interesting that Chad’s death ends up being something that the Necromancer will have to do as well, because if Necromancer and Chad became this weird little black mirror in Superteam, honestly. And there will be a few fingers on this one too. And it’s the idea of death and the loss that comes with it that I’m sure we’re going to explore more in the third season than we have in this series.
Legacy’s magazine airs on Thursdays at 9pm. And after the Walker episodes.
