Now that Zack Snyder’s Justice League movie is airing on HBO Max, DC fans can finally see not only director Zack Snyder’s vision for the superhero team, but also more of Slade Wilson/Deathstroke Joe Manganiello. Manganiello made his debut in Justice League, and at the time the character was planned for Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie, and even the solo Deathstroke movie. Although Warner Bros. has since gone in a different direction with its live-action DC Universe, Manganiello says all plans are ready if they ever want to re-enact Deathstroke.

During his appearance on the Nation podcast, Manganiello said that all the leads had been laid for Deathstroke and that he would like DC fans to see it.

You know – all those leads [for the Deathstroke movie] have been laid, Manganiello said. So you know it’s all there, and I think it would be a shame if the fans never got to see it. I would go to my grave unhappy.

As for those lead roles, Manganiello outlined some of his work and ideas for Deathstroke after the failure of the solo Batman film.

The studio was very excited about the research I did. I started building the character, giving him ideas and building the story. You know, because I think a lot of the Deathstroke stories in the comics are very, very far-fetched. You know, they look a lot like superheroes, Manganiello said. You know when Deathstroke holds the sub over his head and drops it? And I wanted Deathstroke to be human and punished, so I started with the fact that he was in the U.S. Army. Okay, what part? What department? What would he do? Where would you be, you know? What did his wife do? And then, of course, how is the League of Shadows? And why is he carrying a sword? And how do you learn to use a sword? If you, you know, most military people don’t handle katanas, it’s just not their thing. So that part of the story had to go. And so I really perfected it, and they, you know, they loved it. So I worked on it for six months.

He continued: At the end of those six months, I had a two-hour Skype conversation with Gareth Evans, who I mentioned earlier, and Gareth and I started having conversations with the studio about doing a similar, stripped-down version of Deathstroke, which was almost like, imagine Deathstroke in The Raid 2, a revenge movie with Slade, a mask, a band-aid, because he lost his son.

For now, though, it doesn’t look like a Deathstroke movie is in the works. Ann Sarnoff, CEO of WarnerMedia, said earlier this week that there were no plans to promote the Snyderverse.

I appreciate that they like Zach’s work, and we are very grateful for his great contributions to DC, Sarnoff told Variety. We’re glad he was able to get his part of Justice League through, because that wasn’t planned a year ago. This is the end of his trilogy. We’re very excited to do that, but we’re also very excited about the plans we have for all of the multi-dimensional DC characters that are currently in development.
