The past year has been devastating. The world continues to suffer the tragic consequences of the new coronavirus. The film industry was decimated by the pandemic. Theatres are still closed in a large part of the country. Up to 29 years old. In December, total national cash receipts for the 272 largest films amounted to USD 1.37 billion. That’s $10 billion less than the $11.4 billion in 2019. Dark times indeed, but even in the midst of this unique human tragedy, art and the pursuit of stories continued to flourish.

2020, amid seemingly insurmountable obstacles, has been a fantastic year for the cinema. Brilliant filmmakers have brought exciting cinematography to the public thanks to modern technology. The pandemic has changed the way we watch movies for the foreseeable future. Streaming and on-demand services have gone where theatre companies cannot. Disney started this trend by releasing tent films such as Black Widow, but by broadcasting other big-budget films such as Mulan and Soul on the Disney+ streaming platform. Warner Media follows with the theatrical premiere of Wonder Woman in 1984 and their HBO Max service on the same day. The calculated reaction after the worldwide release of Tenet in September failed to get the cash register off the ground. They also shocked the industry by announcing that all their 2021 films would follow the strategy of Wonder Woman 1984. It remains to be seen how these measures will be implemented, but I remain optimistic.

POWERFUL : Blood of 5 Near Stars Samuel L. Jackson and Denzel Washington.

The focus on direct delivery of content to consumers has ensured that independent films have acquired a strong position in the market. Let’s be clear: I can’t wait to go back to an IMAX or Dolby Atmos theater. Nothing beats wonder before you end up in a darkened cinema, eating unhealthy snacks and being hypnotized by a movie. Still, I’m glad we can see new movies, whether on television, computer, phone or tablet.

Films like Steve McQueen’s anthology Small Axe and Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow have been widely praised for the availability of streaming services. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ are at the forefront of this new paradigm. Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Pixar’s Soul, which is miraculously impressive, bring greatness to your living room.

The Best Film of 2020 is an excellent film by writer/director Chloe Zhao Nomad. A grieving widower (Francis McDormand) struggles with economic problems as he travels through the beautiful landscapes of America and lives in a van. Nomadland is also my choice for the best director, the best scenario and the best cinematography. Chadwick Bozeman will be remembered as a Hollywood icon. His last two performances, Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, are also on this list. Boseman was posthumously awarded an Oscar for Best Actor.

Below you will find the 10 best films of the year 2020 and the most important individual awards:

10Thin ash antology

Fault! The file name is not specified.

The Small Axe anthology is a collection of five films by writer/director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Widows). Commissioned by One and Amazon Prime Video, together they tell the story of the lives of Caribbean immigrants in Britain during the turbulent period of the late 1960s and early 1980s. The term Small Axe comes from a song by reggae legend Bob Marley. Little Axe Movies – Mangroves, Lovers of the Rock, Red, White and Blue, Alex Wheat and Education. They investigate a wide range of historical, political and racial conflicts at that time.

My favorite show is the second episode, Lovers of Rock. Inspired by a certain style of romantic reggae music, a young woman (Amara-Jae St. Aubin) sneaks out of the family home to attend a raw party. She meets Franklin (Michelle Ward) and creates a band on a fateful and rhythmic evening. Lovers Rock is in itself one of the best films of the year. Steve McQueen skilfully depicts the dynamic cultural landscape of his youth. The films of Small Axe are another amazing achievement of a famous writer.

9Da 5 Blood

Fault! The file name is not specified.

Black soldiers have fought and died for America since the beginning of the Republic. They sacrificed themselves for a country that has treated them as second-class citizens for most of its history. Da 5 Bloods tackles this variety separation with a masterful storytelling technique. It varies from the turbulent war in Vietnam to the current problems. The film interweaves a fascinating narrative with news, informative side shows and heartbreaking archive footage. Da 5 Bloods also adapts the format and images to display different perspectives. Director Spike Lee has made the most spectacular, provocative and cinematic film of his career.

8Ma Rainey Black Background

Fault! The file name is not specified.

The last performance of Chadwick Boseman is a fascinating conclusion of his illustrious career. With his co-star Viola Davis he leads an excellent ensemble in August Wilson’s playwright adaptation of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The film takes place in 1927, during a day of fighting in a steaming music studio in Chicago. It is a fierce investigation into racial injustice, social inequality, creative freedom and cultural exploitation. The songs of Ma Rainey, the legendary mother of the blues, accompany the story of the battle like a stalking tiger.

7A9 Rarely Sometimes Always

Fault! The file name is not specified.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always is perhaps the most gripping film of the year. A pregnant teenager (Sydney Flanigan) cannot have an abortion in Pennsylvania without her parents’ permission. Her cousin (Talia Ryder) steals her job at the supermarket to get money for an intervention in New York. Whatever your opinion on abortion, never, rarely, sometimes, always creepily honest in your approach. Girls take extraordinary and dangerous paths for their reproductive rights. Never Rare Sometimes you have to see and talk openly. Writer/director Eliza Hittman presents a heartbreaking journey on a very controversial subject. Never Rare receives the prestigious Silver Bear, second place in the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival.

6First cow

Fault! The file name is not specified.

Writer/director Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, Meek’s Cutoff) is known for her personal and minimalist style of filmmaking. His latest work, First Cow, is a fascinating western about two unlikely companions. In 1820 a modest cook (John Magaro) in Oregon helps an enterprising Chinese immigrant (King-Lu) out of a desperate situation. The two men become best friends by coming up with a plan to steal milk from a valuable cow. First Cow is above all a fascinating study of character and friendship. Kelly Reichardt’s gonna be great. I sincerely hope Hollywood will recognize her for this great little movie.

5Minari

Fault! The file name is not specified.

A South Korean immigrant family in rural Arkansas struggled in the early 1980s to realize the American dream. Jacob (Steven Yeung) and Monica (Han Ye-ri) Yi work tirelessly sorting chickens on a poultry farm while raising their two young children (Alan Kim and Noel Kate Cho). Jacob’s hope of survival as a farmer is at odds with Monica’s difficult assimilation into her new life. The arrival of his energetic mother (Yun Yuzhong) unexpectedly changes the dynamics of the family. The minari is a soft and realistic representation of the determination of a family. Minari won the Grand Jury Prize for Theatre and the Audience Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. He will be a strong contender in all categories this season.

4 Child Detective

Fault! The file name is not specified.

Little Detective is a black crime drama with a fascinating protagonist and an absolutely stunning climax. What begins as a story about a broken investigator (Adam Brody) in a small town takes a dark turn with some surprising revelations. The plot creates a slow burning tension. There are moments in the film when you wonder what’s going on. But the blanks were deliberately placed. At the end of the shock, key rings are placed that leave the spectator breathless. Avoid spoilers at all costs. The final scenes hit like a freight train.

3Borat Next item

Fault! The file name is not specified.

Sacha Baron Cohen returns to provocative greatness in a hilarious but deeply disturbing satire. Take the role of the flirtatious Kazakh reporter Borat Sagdijev; in the aptly titled mockumentary The Follow-up of Borat : The delivery of a bribe dictated to the American regime for the once glorious nation of Kazakhstan. This time he’s going to America on behalf of the man in power, President Donald Trump. There are some scenes in this movie that are totally crazy. Cohen pushes the boundaries to expose the ugly currents of misogyny, racism and ridiculous conspiracy theories. He laughed and launched a damning indictment against the sad situation in the country.

Maria Bakalova steals the show as Tutar, the 15 year old daughter of Borat. It seems unthinkable that anyone could dominate Cohen’s theatre, but she expertly overshadows him. In the secondary plot, Borat meets his worthless daughter. She dreams of a life in a better cell, but she is amazed by the abilities of American women. They can drive cars, run their own business and even ask questions. Cohen uses Bakalova as brilliant bait to catch large fish. In the next film, Borat, there’s a couple of firecrackers with punch. Maria Bakalova received an Oscar nomination for Best Biblical Player. His performance is brave and fearless.

2sole

Pixar’s Soul is an uplifting and creative film that makes your heart race. The story of a jazz musician’s journey to the afterlife is sublimely inspiring. It touches on so many aspects of the human experience without being melodramatic or depressing. The soul reminds us that the joy of life is inextricably linked to its flaws. The ups and downs, the yin and yang of existence, can be appreciated. The soul carries a truly fantastic and positive message in a year full of darkness and tragedy.

Soul has a catchy jazz soundtrack that will inspire a new generation of fans. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who won Oscars and Grammy’s for their film scores, should free up more shelf space. The music of Soul is essential for the success of the film. From the pause foot to the sweet ethereal melodies, it’s a support that takes the characters on their whirlwind adventure. Key Stage has the best musical accompaniment of the year. Reznor and Ross are known for their advanced industrial and experimental work. This is where they become unexpected jazz masters.

1C Country of ordering

Fault! The file name is not specified.

Nomadic land is a poetic and haunting representation of poverty in America. It is the most suitable film for our desperate economic times. According to the book by journalist Jessica Bruder, Nomad follows a lonely widower after the collapse of the United States Gypsum Company in Empire, Nevada, in 2011. The city was abandoned and lost its zip code. The stragglers have adapted to survive. Some people choose to live in a mobile home or caravan to save money. Travel the country to find work wherever you can. Their impoverished existence has created a community of travelers. They sought comfort from others when their country abandoned them.

Fern, beautifully played by double Oscar winner Frances McDormand, comes for her service. It is part of Amazon’s CamperForce program, which brings seasonal workers to different warehouses throughout the year. Fern lives in an old van. She’s new to street life. Fern receives much needed advice and friendship from Linda (Linda May), a friendly road veteran. She teaches Fern some simple tricks to make her living space more comfortable.

Writer/director Chloe Zhao (My Brothers Teach Me Song, Rider) is transcendent in her third feature film. He presents Fern’s circumstances as facts. There is nothing sensational about her work in factories, potato farms or cleaning toilets. Fern is sixty years old, has no children and no other way to get money. She has to take every job. Yet his life on the road is full of soul and satisfaction. The lack of comfort of the fern does not define it. Chloe Zhao films breathtakingly beautiful fern scenes that only exist in nature. She has lost everything, but her mind is rejuvenated by her connection with nature.
