Fallout 76 – what’s next? (Image: Bethesda)

Monday’s participants are impressed that Call of Duty has managed to reinvent itself, while one reader wants more games like Sonic 2006.

Slowly
Fallout I noticed that Fallout 3 was mentioned in Weekend Hot Topic, and I found myself nodding my head thinking that Fallout 4 wasn’t much improved, especially graphically, and I think in hindsight, that was the moment that Bethesda started to fall into my lap.

Like many others, I was shocked at the amount Microsoft paid for them, considering their last two games were Fallout 76 and Rage 2, but well, it’s not my money. Clearly, Microsoft needs to know what Bethesda will do next. I wonder if the more optimistic view is that now that they’ve seen Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6, maybe that’s why they were willing to pay $6.5 billion for it (that amount seems even more ridiculous when you type it in!).

But while Bethesda did talk, at least a little, about Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6, they gave absolutely no indication of when Fallout 5 would be released. You said the next Ancient Manuscripts is still a long way off, so at least two years, but does that mean Fallout 5 will still be around in three or four years? Like, uh… 2027 or something? It’s been a very, very long wait for a sequel to a very successful game.

So far I’d be surprised if they got Obsidian to do a spin-off, but of course they were also bought by Microsoft and are now working on Avowed. I guess they could make a Fallout game after that, but that would probably take at least four or five years too. Will Fallout ’76 really hold us up that long?

Surprising to see Call of Duty revisit World War II with this year’s game. Rumors about Call of Duty are also almost always true, so that’s for sure. I wanted to say that Call of Duty seems a bit lost on me at the moment, like it has lost its coherence and seems to be doing random things. It seems to me that it’s behaving like a dying franchise, making sequels and remakes of sub-series that seem to be done and bring nothing new. But the reverse is true, and Call of Duty is rarely as popular.

As far as I know, that’s largely due to Warzone, one of the few games to go over Fortnite’s back and end up being almost as popular. I think old fans like me fell, but they were successfully replaced by younger fans by offering something completely different outside of the main gun game.

It’s hard to think of many other franchises that have done this, as most that have been around for a long time are still pretty much the same. Zelda: Breath Of The Wild is the only thing I can think of that changes current gameplay and doesn’t just use new technologies, although time will tell if it’s a new direction or not.

Room for another
Am I the only one who saw the new Mortal Kombat trailer and wondered why the main character looks like a new character and not one of the traditional heroes from the series?

Yes, that sounds unusually good for a video game, but if there’s one franchise that has no shortage of existing characters to make a fascinating, darkly serious or downright silly and satirical story out of, it’s Mortal Kombat. Who is this new guy and why do we need him?
Your household risk

GC: At first we thought it was Johnny Cage, but apparently his name is Cole Young and Sub-Zero is targeting him because he has a hidden family tree. You’re right, it is a little strange.

One of the worst
games, I’m very disappointed because Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and The Wind Waker HD have not been announced. I wanted other Sonic games like Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 to come back, so Sega could fix all the performance issues this time.

Skyward Sword is one of the worst games I’ve ever played because you can’t go to another part underground, you have to go back to the air and go to another place underground. I wanted a remake of Twilight Princess because of Cave of Shadows. Twilight Princess was an amazing adventure that I will never forget. Please tell Nintendo that fans like me were sad when they heard it wasn’t announced. We need more Sonic on Switch games like Sonic And The Black Knight 2 or the 2006 remake of Sonic.

The year of Zelda
My 2021 Theory Nintendo for the 35th anniversary of Legend Of Zelda :

Sword from heaven: July (announced)
Wind Waker : Princess of the Dawn. August: September Ocarina again: Commander’s mask
October: November
Nameless Sequel for Switch : December (or 2021)

I have also been able to see two or three traces of spirits replacing one or more of the above.

What if they delay Breath of the Wild 2 until 2022!

GC: Breath of the Wild 2 was never confirmed for 2021, so it doesn’t really count as a delay. But we doubt there will be one this year.

Cheap at half price
Thank you for your recommendation The pedestrian is a fun puzzle game.

I play with my eight year old son, he loves it.

I say I’m playing, I watch him play, and I take over if he’s blocked.
It is very beautiful and the music is very soothing.

Star Wars is also on the rise: Seasons that take £30 of anyone’s money are pretty hard to master, but once you get into it, it’s fun.

When I was almost done, I started figuring out what to do next …. The PlayStation 5, which I’ve put off until Christmas, when the stock and controller issues should be resolved.

Hitman 3 and Resident Evil Village look promising, but I’ve decided to give Metro Exodus a shot.

Having never played Metro before, I planned to buy it on Amazon for £25, which seemed like a good price, until I switched to the dark side and looked at the digital copy on the PSN store. £12 ! Are you sure I can’t be wrong about the price?

As a canon
, I could see the Destiny series doing pretty well. It would be a good way to bring a fitting story, and if it’s similar to The Mandalorian, I could see it being popular with people who don’t even play the game.

But it occurred to me that they could have some backup goalies as the real players. It sounds simple and would be a really nice bonus for fans. God, I would have loved that, and I haven’t played this game in years.

Dissecting Inklings
As nice as it was to see Splatoon 3 confirmed, the revelation of its release date in 2022 didn’t exactly generate enthusiasm. The trailer had interesting breasts though. The ability to control exactly where you land on the stage will make all the difference, the arc seems like an interesting addition and, that’s just a guess, but I think the size of Splatsville suggests that it could act as a hub for the game as a whole rather than having a separate hub for the individual player. I think a more complex, interconnected center, with different sections opening up throughout the game and lots of secrets, would be fun.

The most mysterious novelty was probably your boyfriend. What are they for? I can’t imagine them being part of the multiplayer, and the few images shown didn’t seem to include them. Which suggests that they are part of the single-player game. But even then, I can’t imagine what they would look like, especially in the linear, attack-like levels of the two original games. It’s another jump, but perhaps the presence of a companion is a harbinger of a more extensive single-player mode? I hope so! Splatoon 2’s expansion, Octopus, is a big improvement, but there’s definitely more room for growth.

Let’s hope that whatever Nintendo does, they manage to surprise us. I’d love to see a whole new game type, in the same way Salmon Run was presented for #2. I don’t know exactly how they’re going to do it, but the Battle Royale mode could be interesting, especially in solo. It would be a fascinating alternative to the genius that already exists.

GC: A friend can become an additional cooperative character for another player, Nintendo is always up for something like that, as Bowser’s Fury shows.

Inbox also
For the person who recently said in a Hot Topic that Goemon is his favorite long-term franchise, Konami has just updated this page. I’m not sure if that counts as inbox magic or not.

I wonder if there is any news yet on when we can upgrade our PlayStation 5 SSD and when we can use it. It’s been four months and when I play a new game, I have to delete parts.
David

GC: We don’t think Sony has talked about this recently.

This week’s topic is inbox
, based on Sunday being 35 years ago. The birthday of the legend of Zelda is celebrated. So we want you to tell us about your memories of the series and what you would like to see happen in the future.

What was the first Zelda game you played and under what circumstances? What is your favorite Zelda game and how do you think it might affect future releases in terms of remastering/re-release and inspiration for new games? What do you think of Desert Wind and what do you hope for the future?

Saturday is also the 25th anniversary of Pokémon, so if you want to discuss this as well or instead of Zelda, feel free to do so.
